Qualification times are NOT required to compete in the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints.The event is open to all competitors regardless of experience levels.

DANES, HUSKIES DOMINATE 30TH WORLD INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

University of Washington’s McCabe, Struzyna go 1-2 in Open Men’s event.

FEBRUARY 20, 2011 (BOSTON, MA) – The 30th annual C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints, known as the World Indoor Rowing Championships, took place on Sunday, February 20 at Boston University’s Agganis Arena before a record crowd of 7,000 – a figure that topped the previous attendance mark by 1,000 people. Athletes from a diverse collection of nations vied for the famed “Hammer” trophy on Concept2 Model D Ergometers (rowing machines).  The consistency and exacting simulation of the rowing stroke on these machines have made them the gold standard for indoor rowing training for all athletes, particularly at the Olympic level, in health clubs, and for physical rehabilitation.

Over 2,000 competitors rowed 2,000 meters against the clock in various categories that included Men’s and Women’s Open, Lightweight, Under-23, and Junior (eighteen and under) divisions. There were also Master and Veteran brackets for older competitors. Competitors ranged in skill/accomplishment levels from Olympic and world-class athletes to first-year rowers at the club and student level.

Conlin McCabe and Hans Struzyna, teammates at the University of Washington in Seattle, finished their races in the Open Men’s division with times of 5:48.0 and 5:52.6 respectively. Stephen Dudek placed third with a finishing time of 5:56.1.  In achieving his win, McCabe made a regatta first – collecting three gold medals for rowing once – top Open, Under 23, and US Collegiate finisher.

In the Open Women’s field, Kaisa Pajusalu of Estonia earned a gold medal with her time of 6:41.3. Pajusalu is a former Under-19 World Champion and is a current Under-23 World Medalist in the single scull.  Former C.R.A.S.H.-B. winner and three-time Olympian Julia Levina of Russia took the silver medal with a 6:45.3, while Jenny van Dobben de Bruijn of the Netherlands won the bronze with a time of 6:47.6.

In the Lightweight Open Men’s field, Team Denmark produced the top two spots thanks to the efforts of Henrik Victor Stephansen’s 6:01.9 and Steffen Bonde Jensen’s 6:04.8. Stephansen is the current World Record holder for the indoor 2000m (5:58.5). Hungary’s Tamas Varga, a two-time Olympian, was third at 6:10.3. Sarah Juergensen, also of Denmark, won the Lightweight Open Women’s race with a time of 7:11.1. Hilary Saeger of Boston’s Riverside Boat Club was next at 7:16.2 and Germany’s Julia Mareike Ost’s 7:18.2 captured third place.

Only one World Record fell this year.  Roger Borggaard of Cambridge Boat Club (MA) set the new standard for the Veteran Men 65-69 age group with a time of 6:41.4, shaving nearly 3 seconds off of the previous record.  Paul Randall (93) and Sally Callahan (81) were the oldest competitors, while the Sleigh family covered three generations – Claire (Lightweight Junior Women), her father Stephen (Veteran Men55-59), and her grandfather Robert (Lightweight Veteran Men 75-79) all raced on Sunday.

For the second year in a row, the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints hosted an adaptive event for mentally and physically-challenged participants. In 2010, the race had 37 entrants; this year, 63 athletes from adaptive sports centers around the world – including the US Paralympic Program, the Brazilian Rowing Federation, and Community Rowing of Brighton (MA) – rowed 1,000 meters on Concept2 Ergometers adapted to meet their individual needs.

The C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints originated in 1982 when a group of Boston rowers, many of whom were members of the United States National and Olympic Rowing teams training out of Harvard University’s Newell Boathouse, named themselves the “Charles River All-Star Has-Beens” and organized the first indoor meet of its kind. Today, the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints are recognized as the premier indoor rowing regatta in the world.

WORLD INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS SET FOR FEBRUARY 20 IN BOSTON

Boston University’s Agganis Arena to host 30^TH annual C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints

December 20, 2010 (BOSTON, MA) – The C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints, recognized as the premier indoor rowing regatta in the world, will take place on Sunday, February 20, at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. Competitors from around the globe, including World and Olympic medalists, will race 2,000 meters against the clock on Concept2 Model D Ergometers (rowing machines) in several categories including Men’s and Women’s Open, Lightweight, Under-23, and Junior (eighteen and under) divisions. There are also Master’s and Veteran’s brackets for older competitors plus an Adaptive event for mentally and physically-challenged athletes.

The racing begins at 9:00 AM and concludes by 6:00 PM. Admission for spectators is free.

The C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints began in 1982 when a group of athletes from the United States Olympic and World Championship teams formed an indoor regatta at Harvard University’s Newell Boathouse. Led by Tiff Wood, Jake Everett, and Holly Hatton, the “Charles River All Star Has-Beens” invited twenty of their rowing buddies to compete for bragging rights and kegs of beer. Now, three decades later, more than 2,100 rowers vie for the famed “Hammer” trophy in front of approximately 10,000 spectators.

“We look forward to honoring the founders of this amazing event,” said Linda Muri, President of the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints and head coach of Freshman Lightweight Rowing at Harvard University. “For thirty years now, the World Indoor Rowing Championships have had a home in Boston as a direct result of the dedication of people like Kurt Somerville, Lisa Stone, Ken Lynch, Tom Tiffany, and many others. We would not be here today were it not for their collective efforts.”

In 2010, rowers from more than forty different countries – including China, New Zealand, and Russia – competed at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints to make it the most culturally-diverse event of its kind. As well, rowers as young as fourteen and even a few over the age of ninety compete.

“Our partners at Concept2 do an excellent job of helping to market the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints on a global level,” said Muri. “Rowing continues to experience phenomenal growth as a sport worldwide and our regatta has become the highlight of most off-season training programs.”
